A camcorder like no other
After a huge day for product announcements things have settled down a little at CES, and that’s a good thing, as it gives us a chance to tell you about some of the other gadgets that have been catching our eye at Las Vegas.
Of course the big-name tablets and televisions of this world are going to dominate attention, but there have been literally hundreds of other fantastic new bits of kit unveiled at CES that we haven’t had a chance to tell you about yet. So let’s look at just a handful:
Casio TRYX: Casio has thrown those typical camcorder design templates out the window and produced something truly unique in the TRYX. The screen swivels vertically through 270 degrees within the camera frame, which itself swivels horizontally around the lens through a full 360 degrees. It needs to be seen to be believed – and you’ll be able to do just that from April.
Monster Miles Davis Trumpet: real contenders for the most gorgeous earbuds we’ve ever seen, these tributes to one of jazz’s biggest legends are also unbelievably tiny. We particularly like the slider controls on the cables that have been designed to look like trumpet valves. It’s probably no surprise to hear they’ll cost close to £300 when they’re released next month.
Griffin Beacon: it may look like a ringside bell from a boxing match, but the Beacon is far smarter. Combined with an accompanying app, it instantly turns your iPhone into a universal touchscreen remote control, converting Bluetooth signals into infrared so you can control your TV from your phone. Set to be launched in May.
Sony Bloggie 3D: Sony’s gone big on 3D this year, and one of the places it’s chosen to take it is into your pocket with a 3D version of its popular Bloggie cam. Squeezing a pair of lenses and sensors onto its cut-size frame is some feat, plus there’s a stereo mic and a 2.4in 3D-capable screen so you can watch your footage on-camera. Out in the UK around mid-year.
Motorola Atrix: CES isn’t really a mobile event, but a couple of seriously big-hitting smartphones have nonetheless taken a bow. Dubbed the ‘world’s most powerful smartphone’, the dual-core Atrix has 1GB of memory, a 24-bit 4in screen, runs Android 2.2 and has been designed with next-gen 4G networks in mind. It’ll be launched later this year.
MSI Kid Pad: so there is a tablet in our list after all, but the Kid Pad is something different. As the name suggests, it’s designed for children – allowing you to keep your iPad free from jam-encrusted fingerprints while still allowing the kids to get some tablet action. Predictably big and chunky, sadly this 10in slate is just a concept – for now.
